Alexander L. Johnston, longtime Melrose resident, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Lahey Hospital in Burlington.He was 85.
Alexander was born in Glasgow Scotland on March 14, 1933, one of two children of the late Henry and Isabella (Storrar) Johnston.He grew up in Dennistoun Glasgow, where he enjoyed playing soccer, and graduated from the White Hill Secondary School.He joined the British Army serving from 1952-1955.
In 1952, Alexander met Isabella D. Dawson at Dennistoun Palais while attending a dance.And boy did Alexander love to dance.He continued to dance all throughout his life.Alexander and Isabella would go on to get married on March 22, 1957 at White Hill Presbyterian Church in Dennistoun Glasgow.
In 1962, Alexander, Isabella, and their first born daughter left the port of Southampton, bound for New York on the S.S. United States.When they arrived in America, they fist settled in Everett, eventually settling in Melrose to raise their young family.
Alexander went to work as a restaurant equipment serviceman and worked in that field for the next 44 years.Outside of work, Alexander was active in the Scots' Charitable Society of Boston for many years, serving on the Entertainment Committee for a time.He was also an active member of Melrose Highlands Congregational Church where he served as a Life Deacon, and was known as the candy man of his pew at church on Sundays.
Above all, family was everything to Alexander.From family activities to travel, anything he did always involved family.He was active in his children's and grandchildren's lives, almost never missing a school event.He was an excellent husband, and proudly served as Isabella's sous chef.
Alexander relished travel to new places.From spending time at their summer home in Maine, to cruises throughout Europe, they saw as many places as they could. Many great memories were made both near and far.
Alexander's love, support, strength, and amazing sense of humor will be greatly missed by those he touched throughout the years.
Alexander is the beloved husband of Isabella D. (Dawson) Johnston with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Devoted father of Lynn Cunningham and her husband Robert of Melrose, Heather Crafton and her husband Daniel of Norfolk, and Laurie McGuire and her husband James of Melrose.Loving brother of Elizabeth Johnston of Glasgow Scotland.Cherished grandfather of Robert Cunningham and his wife Hannah, Jillian Cunningham, Ashley Cunningham, Brian Crafton, Matthew Crafton, Cameron McGuire, and Alexandra McGuire.Proud great grandfather of Charlotte and Harrison Cunningham.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Alexander's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, June 3rd from 2-6pm, and again on Monday for his Funeral Service celebrated at 10am at Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St., Melrose.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery.
