Mrs. Alice M. (Daly) Dunn of Malden, formerly of Stoneham and Melrose, and beloved wife of Paul Dunn, died Monday evening, April 9, 2007 at the Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center in Malden.She was 86 years old.
Mrs. Dunn was born June 22, 1920 in Cambridge, daughter of the late Carl F. Daly and Julia M. (Nolan) Daly.
Alice grew up and attended school in Stoneham, developing a love of music as a drum major in the marching band and graduating as Valedictorian from St. Patrick's HS.Throughout the 1930's and 1940's, she played the organ for St. Patrick Church.During the war years, Alice worked for the Red Feather Agency, the Red Cross, and at the Watertown Arsenal.Following the war, she began work as a service representative for New England Telephone Company in Malden.In 1947, a co-worker and future sister-in-law introduced Alice to the love of her life, Paul Dunn.Alice and Paul married on September 17, 1949 and raised five children.Alice maintained life-long commitments to her family, her church, and the arts - particularly music and the theatre.An avid reader, Alice was a life-long learner who closely followed political and foreign affairs, instilled in her children the values of education and service, and always maintained a keen wit in her wide-ranging discussions on current issues.In her later years, Alice enjoyed travel and visited her children and their families in Italy, Egypt, Hawaii, Alaska, and many other states.
Alice was the beloved wife of 57 years to Paul R. Dunn; loving mother of Marie D. Ricciardone, PhD and her husband, Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone of Cairo, Egypt; Paula J. Dunn and her husband, John E. Smith of Kenai, AK; J. Edward Dunn and his wife, Sue of Plymouth; William R. Dunn, PhD of Kenai, AK; and Alice D. Smith and her husband, Gary M. of Melrose; sister of Kay Long of Wakefield, Carline Volpe of Stoneham and the late J. Edward Daly. Alice is survived by 13 grandchildren (Francesca, Chiara, Jamie, Philip, Jennifer, Kristin, Kathleen, Chris, Tom, Michael, Brian, Marlena, and Patrick) and 8 great-grandchildren (Jason, Kara, Steven, Alexis, Drew, Evan, Gabrielle, and Guinevere).
