Alice L. Heald, of Peabody, formerly of Wakefield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the Salem Hospital in her 96th year.
Alice was born September 8, 1912, in Chester, Vermont, a daughter of the late Percy E. Heald and Madge (Richardson) Heald.
Alice attended Chester, Vermont schools and graduated from Middlebury College, class of 1933 with a major in French.She obtained her Master's Degree in French in 1954, also from Middlebury.She taught secondary schools in Bethel, VT, Littleton, NH, Springfield, VT, Darien, CT and in Melrose, MA retiring in 1973 from Melrose High School.
Alice enjoyed a variety of interests in her retirement including international travel and silver-smithing.She served on the local boards of the American Red Cross, Melrose Visiting Nurse Association, and the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church as well as on various church committees.She was a member of the Melrose-Wakefield Branch of A.A.U.W. and served as treasurer for several years.She volunteered as a driver for the FISH program in Melrose and taught English as a second language to foreign students.She also volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Alice was the sister of Margaret Lawton of South Burlington, Vermont, the late Rachel Heald and Norman Heald. Sister-in-law of Priscilla Heald of Chester, Vermont.Aunt of Robert Lawton, Nancy Heller, Prescott Heald, Cynthia Murch, and Susan Heald.
