Alice I. Johnson, of Melrose, passed away peacefully at her longtime home on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, 2011, at the age of 96.

Alice was born in Brockton on December 11, 1914, along with her sister Ethel, the third and fourth daughters of parents the late John Anton and Hilma (Lindh) Johnson who immigrated to this country from Vanersborg, Sweden in 1908.She grew up in Brockton but spent her summers at the cottage her father built on Wesagussett Beach in South Weymouth.On December 10, 1942, during World War II, she joined the Women's Army Core where she held the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Signal Corps.She was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

In 1946, she joined her sister Edith and her husband Kenneth Faulkner in Melrose where she ran the office portion of Faulkner's Cleansing until she retired.She resided with the Faulkner family in Melrose until she moved in with the late Charlotte Lloyd.For the last 25 years she had lived in her first floor apartment at the Congregational Retirement Home, Levi Gould.

Alice was active in many organizations including the Hickory Hawks Ski Club, P.E.O. and Kappa Delta Psi.For many years, she volunteered at the office at Fuller House, an adjoining Congregational Retirement Home.She was active in the First Congregational Church and arranged their Vesper Services at Levi Gould.

She was predeceased by her parents as well as her siblings, Ethel L. Rufener, Howard A. Johnson, Dagmar E. Bowles, and Edith H. Faulkner.She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Jean Dougan and her husband Clint of New Hampton, NH, Janet Chapman and her husband Harry of Sausalito, CA, William Faulkner of Marblehead, Stephen Johnson and his wife Joan of Hopkinton, Martha Schnorbus of North Easton and Carolyn McHugh and her husband Ron of Southborough.She is also survived by many great and grand nieces and nephews.

Throughout her long life, Alice had been known as a kind, thoughtful and giving person who was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family.

Funeral Service at the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, June 28 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Gifts in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose, MA 02176.
