Mrs. Alice M. (Shaw) Johnson, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, May 20, 2011 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Johnson was born on October 15, 1917 in Everett, one of two daughters of the late Walter F. Shaw and Gladys M. (Johnson) Shaw.
Alice was raised in Melrose where she graduated from Melrose High School.She worked for many years as a caterer for Harvard University.Mrs. Johnson was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where she was actively involved for many years.She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and member of the Melrose Humane Society.In her personal time, Alice loved cooking, baking, knitting, and crocheting.She loved ice skating which she continued into her 50's, going to Mt. Hood for a round of golf, and watching the Kentucky Derby.More recently, Alice's life centered around her family especially, her 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and beloved dog and cat, Daisy and Calvin.
She was the beloved wife of the late Arne E. Johnson with whom she shared 72 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Walter A. Johnson and his wife Laura of Melrose.Dear sister of the late Nellie B. Shaw.Cherished grandmother of Walter A. Johnson Jr., Eric E. Johnson, Donna M. Johnson, Denise M. Johnson all of Melrose and the late Brenda A. Johnson.Loving great-grandmother of Catelyn A. Johnson, Taylor A. Johnson, Amanda A. Johnson, Nicholas W. Johnson, Brandon R. Tebo, and Brittany M. Nowell.
Funeral Service to honor and remember Alice's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, May 23 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours on Sunday from 2-6 PM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.Gifts in her memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
