Mrs. Althea (Bennett) Hatch, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at Haverhill Crossing on Monday, February 22, 2016, at age 89.

Althea was born on September 27, 1926 in Lynn, one of three children of the late Roy and Miriam (Knapp) Bennett. Raised in Melrose, she was a graduate of Melrose High School Class of 1944, and settled in Melrose to raise a family. She married the late George W. Hatch on September 17, 1949, and moved to Melrose in 1954 where she lived on West Highland Avenue in the same house until 2012. An independent, strong woman, she took pride in her family, home, and later her career as a social worker.

Althea received her Associate's degree from Colby Jr. College and after raising her three children, continued her education at Salem State University where she received her Bachelor's degree in Social Work. She enjoyed her work helping residents and families at the Middlesex Fells Nursing Home and the Arnold House in Stoneham.

Althea was an active participant in the Melrose community. Since High School she was an active supporter and integral member of Kappa Delta Psi. She was a strong supporter of the Melrose PTA for many years and helped begin the construction of the Franklin School. She was a longtime active member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church where she served on the Guild and served as Treasurer. In her free time, she enjoyed taking painting classes with Melrose artist, Roberta Thresher, and was involved with the Campfire Girls.

With her family and friends, Althea loved to travel. Trips to Bermuda with George, and later trips with familyto Europe and friends throughout the US were a highlight. During the summer, week vacations were spent at the camp either in Littleton or at the family cottage in S. Yarmouth.

She was the beloved wife of the late George W. Hatch with whom she shared 34 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Sally E. Hatch of Melrose, William B. Hatch and his wife Jacqueline of Rowley, and G. Douglas Hatch and his wife Suzanne of Byfield. Dear sister of Marcia Langlois and her husband Robert of NJ, and the late Kendall Bennett and his surviving wife Bette of NH.Cherished grandmother of Michelle Stein and her husband Michael, Nicole Hatch, and Jessica Hatch, all of NH. Loving great-grandmother of Colby, Madison, and Nya. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives & friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Althea's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 2-5pm, and on Monday at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St., Melrose for her Funeral Service at 10am. Interment at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
