Mr. Amil A. Olson, of Melrose, died Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after a period of declining health.He was 95 years of age. Mr. Olson was born in Somerville on October 31, 1914 a son of the late Carl V. Olson and Marie A. (Swanson) Olson. Amil was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School.He served his country in the US Navy from 1934 until 1957.Over his naval career, he served active duty in both WWII and the Korean War and was the recipient of several Bronze Stars.He also competed against fellow seamen as a boxer.Upon discharge, Amil had attained the rank of Chief Petty Office and continued his service as a recruiter.A lifelong bugler player, Amil first learned to play the instrument as a member of the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts and continued in the Navy.In his leisure time, Amil loved gardening and his dog, Molly.Mr. Olson was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor J. (Fleming) Olson with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.Devoted father of Sheila A. LeColst and her husbandNeil of Largo, FL, Jon W. Olson and his wife Diane of Winthrop, Marie E. Nassr of Arlington, Emilie J. Gledhill and her late husbandRobert E. of Rockland, ME and Gayle L. Rose and her husband Bill of Melrose.Cherished grandfather of 16 grandchildren and the late Jon W. Olson Jr., many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., MELROSE, Saturday, November 28 at 9 AMfollowed by Funeral Service in honor and remembrance of Amil's life in the First Lutheran Church, 98 Waite St., Malden at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Friday from 4-8 PM.Interment with military honors presented by the US Navy in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
