Mr. Anthony "Tony" DeStefano, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away surrounded by his family at home on Sunday, October 16, 2011, at age 88.
Anthony was born on August 17, 1923 in Boston, a son of the late Andrew and Antonetta (San Filippo) DeStefano. Raised and educated in Somerville, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the young age of 17.He served aboard the LST-3 Naval ship during World War II and on the USS Yellowstone during the Korean War.
A creative and artistic man, Tony worked as a leather designer for many years.He enjoyed painting, especially in watercolors and was well known as a perfectionist in his craft.He received many awards for his portraits and consistently won the senior art contests in Boston.Many of his paintings received awards from the Secretary of the State of Massachusetts, William F. Galvin, and another was purchased for display by Mystic Valley Elder Services.
In his youth, Tony excelled in many sports and he continued, playing golf well into his 80s.He was a proud member of the "Bengay" league at Reedy Meadow Golf Course in Lynnfield.He enjoyed bowling, making jewelry, the New England Patriots, and was a member of Red Sox nation.
Well accomplished with his hands through painting, Tony took similar care in his attention to his tomato garden.He loved growing tomatoes every year and took great pleasure in the details of their growth.
Tony was the beloved husband of LorettaM.(Rimer) DeStefano with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.Devoted father of A. David DeStefano and his wife Bernadette of N. Reading, Kathleen King of Ocala, FL, Greg DeStefano and his wife Kimberly of Lincoln, RI.Dear step-father of Leslie Weiner-Leandro and her husband José of Silver Spring, MD and Eric C. Weiner and his wife Ann of Marlborough.Loving brother of the late Anne Smedile, Josie Campo, Henry DeStefano, Ann Gazzana, Sally Nutt, Tony DeStefano, and Joe DeStefano.Cherished grandfather of Jennifer L. DeStefano, Andrew P. DeStefano, Billy King, Toni M. King, Luke M. DeStefano, Michael A. DeStefano, José Leandro IV, Simon Leandro, Jessica Conville, Joseph Winer, James Winer, and Billy Winer.Loving great-grandfather of Julianna DeStefano.Former father-in-law of Bill King of Raymond, NH.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in celebration and remembrance of Tony's life for visiting hours on Wednesday, October 19 from 4-8 PM at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose and again on Friday, Oct. 21 at Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose where a Graveside Service will be held at 10 AM.
