Mr. Arnold J. Baldwin, a resident of Brooksby Village in Peabody and formerly of Middleton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the Spaulding Hospital - North Shore, at age 90.
Mr. Baldwin was born in Derby, Connecticut on November 16, 1922, one of three children of the late John T. and Hilda (Fletcher) Baldwin.Raised and educated in Derby, CT, he served his country proudly in the US Army during WWII.After the war ended, he completed his service time at the Eisenhower Headquarters in Paris, France.Following his return home and an honorable discharge, he graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. In September of 1950, he married Eileen A. Mansfield and they settled in Woodbridge to raise a family.
Mr. Baldwin worked as a mechanical engineer for the Farrel Corporation based in Ansonia, CT for his entire professional career.Starting at the young age of 18, he worked for Farrel for nearly 40 years, retiring at age 66 and continuing on as a consultant.A well regarded mechanical engineer, Mr. Baldwin owned several machine patents.
Aside from his professional life, Mr. Baldwin loved golfing, sailing, model trains, and travelling.He travelled everywhere around the world from Italy, Amsterdam, France, the Grand Canyon, cruises along the Rhine River and across the United States.A fine craftsman, he built custom wood cabinets for his kitchen and built-ins around his home in Woodbridge.Arnold enjoyed summer vacations to Brewster on Cape Cod, and spending the winter months in Nokomis, Florida.Always ready to enjoy life, he was quick to remind all that happy hour started at 5 o'clock.In 1994, he married the late Janet Baldwin and they enjoyed 18 years of wintering in Florida and travelling in between.
Mr. Baldwin will be remembered as the beloved husband of the late Janet (Taylor) Madden Baldwin and the late Eileen A. (Mansfield) Baldwin.Devoted father of Lee A. Bathelt and her husband John of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jay M. Baldwin and his wife Barbara of Woodbridge, CT.Dear stepfather of Jane M. Richmond and her husband Richard of N. Andover, Christopher J. Madden and his wife Debra of Hopedale, and Peter B. Madden and his wife Marissa of Reading. Dear brother of Marion Lane and her husband Jack of Seattle, and the late Arthur W. Baldwin and his late wife Ruth.Cherished grandfather of Cynthia Bathelt, Kurt Bathelt, Sarah Richmond, Emily Phillips, John Richmond, Daniel Madden, Brian Madden, Connor Madden, Lauren Bemister, Ashley Happy, and Peter B. Madden, Jr.Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Arnold's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, March 20 for his Funeral Service celebrated at 12:30 PM.Services will conclude with US Army military honors.Gifts in Arnold's memory may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Ste.
