Mr. Arnold D. "Red" Carlson, a longtime resident of Lynnfield, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his home in Lynnfield. He was 80 years old.
Arnold was born on October 29, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois a son of the late Peter and Esther (Johnson) Carlson.
Arnold was raised and educated in Twin Falls, Idaho. He graduated from Idaho State University with a BS in 1952 and MIT (Sloan Fellow), MS in industrial management in 1966. In 1955 he moved to Massachusettsto pursue his career with AVCO (Textron) from which he retired in 1993. He was an active member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church where he sang in the choir, and served on several boards and committees. He was a gifted leader of adult bible study. Arnold had a keen mind and strong intellectual curiosity which led to a depth and breadth of knowledge in diverse areas including astronomy, geology, American history, natural history, and religion. An avid outdoorsman, he took many trips to the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho and to Yellowstone National Park where he enjoyed taking classes at the Yellowstone Institute.
Arnold was the beloved husband of the late Norma (Bogar) with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. Loving father of Keren Hummer and her husbandGreg of Lynnfield, Peggy Lindquist of Newburyport, Marcia Imbrescia and her husband John of Lynnfield, John and his wife Elise of Sharon, CT, Christine Nicholas and her husband Brian of Eagle, ID, Eric and his wife Sherri of Wakefield and David and his wife Kecia of Boise, ID. Dear brother of Elsie "Bonnie" Bullock of Boise, ID and the late Harold Carlson and Anne Gustafson. Dear cousin of Neil Jean Swenson of Council, ID.He was the cherished grandfather of Nathan, Lee Schulz, Bethany and Sam Hummer, John Marc Imbrescia and Stefanie Imbrescia, Alyson, Leslie and Sara Lindquist, Benjamin and Eric Carlson, Rachel and Emily Nicholas, Craig, Justin and Paige Carlson. Cherished great grandfather of Isla Hummer and Penelope Schulz.Also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.
