Barbara (Shimmin) Schofield

Barbara (Shimmin) Schofield, a resident of Salem, New Hampshire and formerly of Marblehead, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, October 30, 2023, at age 93.

Barbara was born in Braintree on February 1, 1930, one of three children of the late Herbert Shimmin and Helen (Sawyer) Shimmin. She was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, and from the University of Vermont, Class of 1951. Barbara married George H. Schofield, III on March 31, 1951 and together they raised four children.

Barbara loved football and was a diehard New England Patriots fan. She was also a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. She and George had season tickets to the Celtics for several years, and enjoyed attending any sporting event, including seeing the Red Sox play in the World Series at Fenway. The family also attended the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal and the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, watching the US Mens Hockey Team win the Gold medal. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Salem Country Club, for many years she enjoyed spending time with George playing golf there, and continued watching golf into her 90’s. When living in Marblehead for many years, they were longtime members of the Corinthian Yacht Club.

Barbara’s hobbies, among other things included stamp and coin collecting, tracing the family tree through Genealogy, jigsaw puzzles and playing bridge. She was always up for an adventure and trying new things. She was a loyal friend, great listener, had a great sense of humor and always knew the right thing to say.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Edward & Herbert Shimmin and her husband of 57 years, George H. Schofield III.

She is survived by her children George H. Schofield IV and his wife Marie of Lakewood, CO, Linda J. Brown and her husband Kevin of Breckenridge, CO, Lauren S. Emmick and her husband Marty of Middleton, MA and Robert G. Schofield and his wife Melanie of Moultonborough, NH. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren
