Mr. Benjamin C. "Ben" Castro, a Melrose resident, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, July 28, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. He was 87 years old.Mr. Castro was born in the Pampanga province of the Philippines, one of three children to the late Melecio R. Castro and Margarita (Castro) Castro.Benjamin C. Castro was born, raised and educated in the Philippines.During WWII, he proudly served his country in the Philippine Army alongside American troops under General MacArthur.He served as the Chief of Police for La Carlota Sugar Central in the Philippines and as Customs Inspector for the Philippine Government.After immigrating to the United States in 1971, Ben was a self employed business man.He enjoyed watching old movies especially concerning WWII and those starring actor John Wayne.Mr. Castro was also an avid reader.Mr. Castro was the beloved husband of Teresita (Locsin) Castro with whom he shared 64 years of marraige.Loving father of Melvin Castro and his wife Arleen of Baltimore, Maryland, Lorna McGinty and her husband John of Baltimore, Marijo Fadrigalan and her husband Tom of Taunton, Catherine Genthner and her husband Jim of Baltimore, Charlie Castro and his wife Mary of Framingham, Cristina Palmisano and her husband Rob of Baltimore, Manny Castro and his wife Lisa of Baltimore, Ana Castro of Dorchester and her boyfriend Brian Dempsey of Weymouth and the late Edwin Castro.Dear brother of Manet Castro of Baltimore, MD and the late Jose C. Castro. Dear brother-in-law of Perla Castro of Homestead, FL and Anita Locsin of Randolph. Cherished uncle of Grace Soriano and her husband Ruel of Homestead, FL.Cherished grandfather of Arvin Castro, Mae Wilkinson, Stephen Castro, Maria Torres, PJ Torres, Marissa Castro, Katrina Castro, Randy Soriano, Gina Soriano and Ryan Soriano. Cherished great grandfather of Paige Wilkinson, Tyler Castro and Maci Wilkinson.
