Mrs. Betty (Minnis) Downey, of Wakefield, formerly of Melrose and Brookline, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after a period of declining health.She was 89 years old.
Betty was born in Brookline on December 27, 1920, one of three children of the late David Minnis and Willa (Kenney) Minnis.
Mrs. Downey was raised in Brookline, graduated from Brookline High School, Class of 1938 and Simmons College in 1942.She worked for the Department of Agriculture as a processed food inspector in Florida, New York and Pennsylvania.Betty and her late husband, Ronald Downey, were longtime active members of Green Street Baptist Church.She was a member of the Women's Guild, served on the Education Commission, the Deaconate Board, and as clerk of the Church for 12 years. Betty also was a member of the Women's Club of Melrose, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Sewing Guild, Community Associates and past president of the Woman's Republican Club and Church Women United of Melrose.She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading and above all else, loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She was the beloved wife of the late Ronald M. Downey with whom she shared 58 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Janice C. Downey of Georgetown, Alan G. Downey and his wife Christina of Wilmington, Kenneth R. Downey and his wife Mary Ellen of Reading and the late Bruce A. Downey and his wife Raeann Downey of Beverly Farms.Predeceased by two brothers, William and Gordon Minnis, and a grandson, Jonathan Downey.Cherished grandmother of Stephen Downey of Malden, Roger LaRochelle of Danvers, Michael LaRochelle of Danvers, Kevin Downey of Boston, and Elizabeth Downey of Allston.Loving great-grandmother of Shayne, Ryan, and Alexandra.
