Betty M. (Jewell) Haskell, a nearly lifelong resident of Malden, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital at age 95.
Betty was born in Stoneham on July 9, 1928, one of two children of the late Irving and Janet (Lingley) Jewell. Raised in Malden, she graduated from Malden High School and married fellow Malden High graduate Wendell Haskell in 1950. They settled in Malden to raise a family of four children, and she worked for a short time at Western Union.
Betty had simple needs in life. She cherished time spent surrounded by her family, and provided steadfast support for her husband and children. She loved being a mother, and filled the role with selfless care and good natured concern for her children. She was a longtime, active member of the Forestdale Community Church in Malden where she was a regular volunteer and an integral part of the church community. In her free time, she was a passionate Boston sports fan, especially the Bruins, and Patriots.
Betty was a quiet, understated woman, but had a dry sense of humor that kept everyone guessing and laughing. She will be lovingly remembered for her dedication to family, her community and her church. May she rest in peace.
Betty was the beloved wife of the late Wendell P. Haskell with whom she shared 68 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Peter Haskell and his wife Susan of Wakefield, Judy Gilligan and her husband Steven of Seabrook, NH, James Haskell and his wife Susan of Tewksbury, and the late Barbara Tamasi. Dear sister of Dana Jewell of Malden. Cherished grandmother of 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather for her Funeral Service on Monday, April 1 at 11am at the Forestdale Community Church, 235 Forest St., Malden. Interment will be private. Gifts in memory of Betty may be made to the Forestdale Community Church, 235 Forest St., Malden MA 02148.
