Mrs. Carol L. (Mason) Clayton, of Northborough, and formerly a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the place she affectionately called home, the Coleman House, in Northborough, at age 90.
Carol was born on June 20, 1923 in Worcester, daughter of the late Charles F. and Charlotte (Grant) Mason.She was raised in Saugus where she graduated from Saugus High School.She met her husband Henry while ice skating on the flooded Saugus playground and they raised a family of three children.They settled on E. Woodcrest Drive, directly on the Saugus/Melrose line and Carol cherished the delights of being a mother. She enjoyed caring for her children as they grew, and was involved with the Saugus schools and various PTOs.
Carol will be lovingly remembered as a sweet, gracious woman who was always optimistic and always a good listener.She loved her pet parakeets, her lovebird, and her many beloved dogs who acted as great companions and made the Mason & Clayton home feel complete.
One of Carol's great passions in life was listening to any type of music, but especially classical.Although she never learned to play, she made sure her children all had piano lessons, and joined the organ club with husband Henry.Other interests that brought her much joy were tending to her yard and gardening, reading any book she could find especially Civil War books, and flying with her pilot/husband Henry around Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
Carol found great happiness and peace at her family cottage in Ipswich on Little Neck Beach.She loved everything that came with being near the ocean.She loved swimming, walking the beach, breathing the salt air, and revisiting countless memories from Little Neck Beach.
Carol was the devoted wife of the late Henry A. Clayton.Loving mother of Carol A. DiGregorio of Vero Beach, FL, Nancy J. Clayton of Sudbury, and the late C. Dennis Clayton.Caring grandmother of Richard Marquis of FL, Lauren Marquis of TX, and Allison Sjolund of Canton.
Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, February 24 at 10:00 AM. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
