Mr. Charles R. "Chuck" O'Connell, a Melrose resident, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 12, 2011 at Melrose Wakefield Hospital.He was 67 years old.
Charles O'Connell was born on March 8, 1944 in Quincy, one of three sons of the late C. Joseph O'Connell and Eleanor R. O'Connell.
Charles or "Chuck" as he was lovingly known, worked in construction as a truck driver for J.F. Price of Weymouth.Chuck was instrumental in establishing the AA program which meets at First Baptist Church in Melrose.He was the initial program leader 20 years ago when it was founded and continued leading the meetings for many years.He also counseled others struggling with addiction at New England Memorial Hospital in what was known as the "Blue Room."He loved watching sports, especially golf, the Red Sox and Patriots.He was a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters, Alexis and Rylee.
Chuck was the beloved husband of Nancy (Stillings) O'Connell with whom he shared 38 years of marriage.Devoted father of Sean J. O'Connell and his wife Cindy of Methuen and Rachel A. Middleton and her husband Robbi of Woburn.Dear brother of James O'Connell of FL and the late C. Joseph O'Connell, Jr.Cherished grandfather of Alexis G. and Rylee M. Middleton.Dear son-in-law of Rachel H. Stillings and the late Hugh W. Stillings.Also survived by his favorite pet cats, Zena and Katie.
Funeral Service in honor and celebration of Chuck's life at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose on Friday, September 16 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday from 4-8 PM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.Gifts in Chuck's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA01701.
