Claire was born on December 14, 1922 in Somerville, daughter of the late Earl A. McClellen and Lillian Pearl (Beckler) McClellen.Claire graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1940 and lived the rest of her life in Melrose.She attended the Burdett School of Business in Boston and worked for many years as a clerk for John Hancock Life Insurance Co., and later for Royal Insurance.
Claire stayed actively engaged in the community throughout her 90 years of life.She was a member of Rainbow for Girls, the 200 Club, Melrose Camera Club, a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, and volunteered for the City of Melrose at the polls on Election Day.She was a very enthusiastic sports fan, enjoyed bingo, knitting, and word games.She drove until age 89 and always offered neighbors and friends a ride to their appointments.Her other main interest was travelling and she looked forward to yearly trips to Maine to Perkins Cove for a lobster roll at Barnacle Billy's.Other destinations included trips with her friends to either California or Texas.However, as she always said above all else, her pride and joy was her niece, Cheryl, and nephews, Glenn and Brian Hayes.
Claire was the loving sister-in-law of G. Fred Hayes and his wife Shirley of Melrose, and Robert Hayes and his wife Marie of Norton.Cherished aunt of Cheryl Hayes of Stoneham, Glenn Hayes and his wife Michele of VT, and the late Brian Hayes.Great aunt of Nicholas and Jennifer Hayes of VT.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Claire's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Tuesday from 4-7PM, and at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose where her Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.For directions, online tribute or to share a memory, visit RobinsonFuneralHome.com
