Mrs. Contarina L. "Rene" (Bowen) Young, a resident of Wakefield, and formerly longtime of Melrose, passed away at home on Friday, February 7, 2014, at age 95.
She was born on October 4, 1918 in Hatley, Quebec, a daughter of the late Hugh Edward Bowen and Fannie (Brennan) Bowen.She was raised one of eight children on the family dairy farm in Hatley and met her future husband while in elementary school.She graduated from the Stanstead Business School, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for several years.After her marriage to Clinton H. Young, they moved to Wakefield in 1947.
Mrs. Young was the proud mother of four sons who she raised in Melrose after moving there in 1959. Family was most important, and she stayed close with her siblings for many years after moving from Canada.She often enjoyed reminiscing about their childhood in Canada, and looked forward to visiting her dear friend and sister, Ruth, in Vermont.For many years, she and Ruth returned to Quebec to stay for the month of August at their cottage on the lake.
She loved cooking for her children and grandchildren, especially baking chocolate chip cookies.As a grandmother, she was very generous of her time and enjoyed looking after her grandchildren.She enjoyed having people come over and always had a hot meal ready on the table. She loved to talk, was very sociable, and enjoyed getting together with her friends and neighbors.
After Clinton's passing, Mrs. Young found comfort in her membership at the First United Methodist Church and the Leyton Circle. Above all else, family meant the most, and she cherished the many memories and time she spent with them.
Contarina was the beloved wife of the late Clinton H. Young with whom she shared 32 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Robert E. Young and his wife Marion of Gambrills, MD, Alan H. Young and his wife Cynthia of Melrose, Colin H. Young and his wife Jeanne of Wakefield, and Thomas C. Young of Wakefield.Dear sister of Edward and Rodney Bowen both of Ontario, Canada, and the late Morton, Donald, Thomas, John, and Ruth Humphrey.Cherished grandmother of Andrew Young, Michael Young, Ami Loiacono, Christopher Young, Kristine Robinson, and Lauren Young.Loving great-grandmother of Clinton, Jack, Cillian, Giovanni, Dominic, and Colin.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Contarina's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, February 11 from 4-8 PM, and again for her Funeral Service celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00AM. Gifts in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
