Dennis K. "Hungry Herb" O'Brien
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 1, 1946, one of four children of the late Kenneth E. O'Brien, Sr. and Marian (Bashaw) O'Brien.He was raised in Cranston, RI and settled in Malden.Affectionately known as "Hungry Herb" he was the proprietor and cook of Hungry Herb's Restaurant on Salem Street in Medford.Dennis originally worked as a meat cutter in the Butcher Shop at the Hilltop Steakhouse on Rt. 1.His restaurant which he operated from 1987 until 2003 was known for great steak tips, generous portions, and for Hungry Herb himself, always making his customers feel great.
Dennis played quarterback, basketball, and ran cross country for his high school team in RI.His love of sports continued as he developed a passion for golf as an adult.He enjoyed many rounds at his favorite golf course, Georgetown Country Club.He also loved watching college sports and all the Boston sports teams.
He will be forever remembered as "the best grandfather in the world."Lovingly known as "Lala" to his two grandchildren, Benjamin and Annie, he loved watching them grow up and especially cherished taking them to their sporting events.
Dennis was the beloved husband of Susan (Fernald) O'Brien with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.Devoted father of Stephanie S. MacKinnon and her husband Robert of Billerica, and Ryan K. O'Brien and his fiancée Jennifer Gill of Malden.Dear brother of Steven M. O'Brien and his wife Lisa of Coventry, RI, and the late Kenneth and Robin O'Brien.Cherished grandfather of Benjamin MacKinnon and Annie MacKinnon both of Billerica.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Dennis' life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, April 13 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM followed by his Funeral Service celebrated at 2:00 PM.
