Donald L. Fox, of Gloucester and formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Seacoast Nursing Center on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on December 4, 1943, in Boston, Don grew up in Watertown, and graduated from Watertown High School in 1961. He went on to pursue a bachelors degree, graduating from the Northeastern School of Pharmacy in 1966.
In 1963, Don met the love of his life, Jane Horsley, and they would share a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. After living in West Newton and Stoneham, they settled in Melrose to raise their family.
Don dedicated 43 years as the owner of the Melrose Drug Center, where he was known for his friendly demeanor, kind heart, and generous spirit. After retiring, he and Jane enjoyed the beauty of Gloucester, cherishing their time spent together by the ocean, and traveling to many favorite places. Don was not only a devoted family man, but he also maintained close ties with his childhood friends, showcasing his everlasting commitment to those he loved.
A passionate watercolor artist, Don found joy in painting and frequently displayed his work at his drugstore and art shows at the Beebe Estate and Memorial Hall. He had a zest for life that extended to the beach, where he loved riding waves and playing catch with his grandchildren. He also found great joy playing pool and participating in various sports during his youth, including baseball and soccer.
Don was also deeply committed to his community, actively participating in the First Congregational Church of Melrose and as a long-standing member of the Lions Club. His strength shone through as he courageously overcame many serious illnesses throughout his life.
Don was the beloved husband of Jane (Horsley) Fox with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Devoted father of Lauren Greer and her husband Albert of South Kingstown, RI, and Gregory Fox and his wife Alison of Bristol, RI. Loving brother of the late Susan Worth and the late Alan Fox and his surviving wife Beverly Peterson. Cherished grandfather of Jordan, Spencer, Cooper, and Quinn Greer, and Joseph and Anna Fox. He is also survived by cousin Cynthia Marshall of Westbrook, CT.
