Ms. Dorothea I. Browne, a resident of Melrose, passed from this life while at home with her family on Friday evening, December 23, 2011, at the golden age of 93 ½. Her greatest passion was serving her God and meeting and helping people. Dorothea, a faithful woman, inspired and influenced many as a mother, friend, couturier and entrepreneur.
Dorothea was born in St. Kitts, British West Indies on July 2, 1918, a daughter of the late Ralph and Mary E (Wyatt) Browne and sister of the late Althea and Claude Browne.At the age of eight, she discovered her passion for fashion. In 1948, she graduated from the McDowell School of Designing and Dressmaking in New York City. Upon graduation, she returned to Trinidad to open her very own business, Brownee Gowns. For many years, she served a diverse clientele with wedding gowns, ball gowns, carnival costumes and professional attire in Trinidad, and later in Massachusetts.Just as she was creative in dressmaking, she was a creative hostess who loved cooking and entertaining.
She was a woman who lived her faith to the fullest each and every day. She sang in the choir and was very active for many years in church activities in St. Kitts, Trinidad and Boston.She was a founding member of the Trinidad Affiliate of the Unity School of Christianity, a member of the Church of the Nazarine women's prayer group in Melrose and in later years she was a parishioner at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Roxbury. She was also a founding member of the Beta Mu Chapter (Trinidad and Tobago) of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Driven by faith, during World War II she organized concerts to raise money for the Red Cross.
"Dot" as her friends called her, loved to be with family and friends, and enjoyed travelling to be with them or to experience new cultures and places; whether in the U.S., Caribbean, Prague, Scandinavia, or one of her favorite places, Scotland.
Always gracious, Dorothea will be remembered for her deep love and loyalty to family and friends. Devoted mother of Marie-Therese "Tess" Browne, S.C.N. of Quincy; Cesar (Angela) Howad, Jackie (Lloyd) Duff, Rosita Dottin, Earl (Grace) Martin and Josephine (Robert) Rochard of Trinidad; John Osmond (Jan) Martin of Florida, Dave (Elena) Martin of Sweden and Anthony Ferran. Beloved godmother of Rosa Julia Perez of Florida, Avelain Fraites of St. Kitts, Charmaine Carter of Arizona, Noble Patrick Martin of New York, Geri Agrey and Roxanne Munroe of Canada; Gina Ache, Joanne Maharaj and Samantha Rochard of Trinidad. Foster sister of Vivian John of New York. Cousin of Daisy Nanton of Baltimore, and Nova Mallalieu of St. Kitts, Linda Cardona of New York and other cousins. Aunt of Clement Browne of St. Thomas and Royd Browne of U.K. She also survived by many great nieces, great-great nieces, great-great-great nieces, and one great nephew.
Dear friend of the late Eugene and Rosalie DeFreitas. She also leaves her extended family members, Elsie Warner and family, Libusa Cochrane-Muir, Chantal Blanton, Sonja Erlich and family, the late Marie Reynolds, and the late John and Patricia Sullivan and their family. She also leaves treasured friends of many years at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (Kentucky) and the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi (Milwaukee, WI).
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Dorothea's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Thursday, December 29th from 4-6 PM and at the St. Katharine Drexel Parish Center, 175 Ruggles St., Roxbury on Friday, December 30th from 4-8 PM with a Celebration of her Life held at 6:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her honor at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 517 Blue Hill Ave., Roxbury on Saturday, December 31st at 11:00 AM.
