Mrs. Dorothy A. (Wills) Ryder, of Melrose, passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the Cape Regency and Rehabilitation Center in Centerville.She was 83 years old.Mrs. Ryder was born on July 31, 1927 in Revere, one of six children of the late John A. Wills and Evelyn B. (Waldron) Wills.
Dorothy graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1947 and from Burios Business School.She worked as manager of the mail room at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital before working as the manager at H&R Block in Woburn.
A longtime Melrose resident, Mrs. Ryder was a very active member of the community.She was a member of the Melrose Rainbow, Past Matron of the Revere and Melrose Order of the Eastern Star, leader for the Camp Fire Girls, Den Mother for Boy Scouts, and a member and past treasurer of the First Baptist Church.She was active in the local Girl Scouts Club, International Fan Trailer Club, and sang in the Church choir at First Baptist Church.Dorothy was also a seamstress and while living in Largo, Florida, was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church.
Dorothy Ryder was the beloved wife of David L. Ryder with whom she shared 61 years of marriage.Devoted mother of William R. Ryder, Susan VanKleef and her husband Harold, Sr., and Judith E. Lybik and her husband John.Dear sister of Helen Bryant, Ruth French, Marjorie Wills, John A. Wills, Jr. and the late Evelyn Benson.Cherished grandmother of Martina Ryder, Michael VanKleef Jr., Kristy VanKleef, Matthew Lybik, and Rebecca Lybik.
Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday from 4-8 PM.Funeral Service at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, September 18 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
