Mr. Douglas W. Ferguson, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2014, in Medford, at age 86.

He was born on August 4, 1927 in San Antonio, TX, one of two sons of the late Everett E. Ferguson, and Elizabeth P. (McMurrey) Ferguson.Raised in San Antonio, Doug served his country in the US Navy during WWII from 1945 to 1948.After a chance meeting at a USO roller-skating event, he married his beloved wife of 62 years, Marie Brosnahan on June 17, 1951 at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden.They lived in Malden for several years before settling in Melrose to raise their three children.

Mr. Ferguson worked as a Registered Professional Engineer specializing in the design and installation of industrial HVAC systems.He was well known in the field for designing the first "clean room" through the use of the HVAC.Doug worked for General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) in Wakefield for 22 years and for Ganton McMullen Engineering in Boston.He travelled extensively, especially to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the HVAC installations in the glass factory industry.Closer to home, Mr. Ferguson designed HVAC systems for many area churches, and the commercial buildings along Rt. 128.

With a great knowledge of the English language and a dry sense of humor, Doug always enjoyed a good pun.He had an inquisitive mind and enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles in pen.Always the gentleman, he taught his family the values of respect for others, and love for family.He was an easy going man, but with a clear idea of right and wrong.

During his leisure time, he enjoyed caring for the lawn, gardening, golfing, and travelling.He enjoyed trips with Marie to Hawaii, Jamaica, the Hoover Dam, and yearly adventures with friends to the Catskills in New York.More recently, he became an accomplished cross-stitcher with the precise weavings of an engineer.Above all else, Mr. Ferguson was a family man who cherished the time he spent with his family.

Doug was the beloved husband of Marie T. (Brosnahan) Ferguson with whom he happily shared 62 years of marriage.Devoted father of Michael W. Ferguson and his wife Irene of Dover, NH, Anne M. Baldonado and her husband Richard of Bradford, and Patricia L. Marcus and her husband Kris of Westborough.Dear brother of James W. Ferguson of Adkins, TX.Cherished grandfather of Matthew and his wife Amy, Sarah, Dawn and her husband Carlos, Brendan, Megan, Leah, Rachel, and Julia.Loving great-grandfather of Carlos, Isabel, and Zoe.Dear brother-in-law of Edna Brosnahan of Danvers.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Doug's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, January 21 from 4-8 PM, and again on Wednesday morning at 9:30 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM.Interment with US Navy military honors at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.Gifts in memory of Doug may be made to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
