Mr. Douglas B. Morello, a resident of Stoneham, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Mass General Hospital in Boston.He was 81.
Douglas was born on June 10, 1932 in Somerville, one of three sons of the late Joseph Morello and Mary F. (Blanchard) Rudenstein.He was raised in Stoneham and graduated from Stoneham High School where he played football, basketball and baseball.He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Doug ventured out west to Las Vegas, Nevada.He quickly rose through the ranks and became casino manager to several of the large casinos in Las Vegas.At a time when Las Vegas was just beginning to grow, Doug was involved with building the casino from the ground up. Doug had a charming way about him, and people were drawn to his engaging personality.He loved playing hearts, talking with people, and enjoyed the luxurious and lavish lifestyle that Las Vegas provides.He was a math genius and coupled with his endearing personality, he was an instant success in the casino industry.After 30 years, he returned home to Massachusetts to be around his many family members and friends.
An avid golfer, Doug was a member of the Las Vegas Country Club and Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover.Doug enjoyed life, had a generous heart, and loved taking you out for a good meal.He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Doug was the beloved longtime companion of Elaine DeFranzo of Medford.Devoted brother of the late Kenneth Morello, and Joseph Morello. Cherished lifelong friend of Edward and June Pinato of Stoneham.Loving godfather of Debbie Walsh of Stoneham, Billy Ann Gallagher of Stoneham, and Christina Conrad of Norwood, and family friend to Darlene DeStefano of Stoneham, Diane Vaughan of Stoneham, and Susan Mello of Wakefield.Doug is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and his friends in Las Vegas: Michael, Tom, and Ron and many others.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Doug's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, May 22 from 4-8PM, and again on Friday morning at 9:00AM before leaving in procession to St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Services will conclude with military honors presented by the US Army.
