Miss Edna F. Brosnahan, a resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at the Atrium at Veronica Drive in Danvers on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at age 86.
Edna was born on February 29, 1928 in Malden, one of two daughters of the late John E. Brosnahan, and Mary A. (Dillon) Brosnahan. Raised in Malden, Edna graduated from Girls Catholic High School. Edna was always very proud to be a Leap Year Baby. A woman with great determination and self-confidence, she worked for many years as Manager in the accounting department for New England Telephone Co. She worked in the Watertown offices, and later in downtown Boston, and was a longtime member of the New England Telephone Pioneers Club.
Independent and strong willed both in her working and home life, Edna was also a loving and devoted daughter. When her parents encountered health problems at a young age, Edna did not hesitate to move back home and care for them. Although she had a long working career, Edna was a family woman who loved spending time with her many generations of nieces and nephews. She was the originator of the creative and fun card game fondly called "The Game" that the family plays every Christmas. Every year, she would collect nearly 100 gifts to wrap and would be filled with excitement and laughter when the time came for everyone to open their mystery gifts. She also was known to go for drives with her parents, often ending up at a restaurant for dinner. She particularly liked relaxing mornings spent at Revere Beach with a cup of coffee, the newspaper and the warm summer sun.
Edna enjoyed debating, reading, and talking politics. She had a special fondness for the St. Patrick's Day Breakfast and especially loved watching as Billy Bulger would roast his fellow politicians every year.
As a young woman, Edna and a group of her friends vacationed together on Cape Cod. Edna enjoyed it so much, that she soon became the proud owner of her own summer house in West Dennis.
Edna was a longtime member of the Melrose Garden Club, and served as Treasurer for many years. With her background in accounting, she watched the budget closely and her precise calculations were always respected and appreciated by the members. It was through the Garden Club that Edna made many lasting friendships that she held close to her heart. Edna will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends, and her memory will live on in each of them.
Edna was the cherished sister of Marie T. (Brosnahan) Ferguson and her late husband Douglas of Melrose. Beloved aunt of Michael W. Ferguson and his wife Irene of Dover, NH, Anne M. Baldonado and her husband Richard of Bradford, and Patricia L. Marcus and her husband Kris of Westborough. Edna is also survived by several loving cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and her best friend Eleanor Hooton of Melrose.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Edna's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, June 10 at 10 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM. Interment in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Gifts in Edna's memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38143.
