Mrs. Effie M. (Smith) Thistle, of Melrose, formerly of Saugus, passed away peacefully in her 97th year on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Kirkwood House in Wakefield.
Effie Smith was born on September 24, 1914 in Somerville, one of seven children of the late George and Beatrice (Reid) Smith.
Effie was raised and educated in Saugus.She worked at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and for many years at American Mutual Insurance Co. in Wakefield.She proudly served as an air raid warden in the civil defense during World War II.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Melrose and the Order of the Eastern Star, Melrose Chapter #14.
Effie will be lovingly remembered as an incredibly kind and loving person.She will be much missed by her family, friends, and the residents and caretakers at the Kirkwood House in Wakefield.
She was the beloved wife of the late Oliver Thistle.Devoted mother of the Reverend Judith A. Thistle of Worcester, NY and David O. Thistle of Melrose.Dear sister of Phyllis Corrado of Lynn, Doris Colorusso of NH, and the late H. Baxter Smith, Margarita Berry, George H. Smith and Winifred Murray.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She also leaves her cherished and most dear friends, Nicholas and Barbara DiLoreto of Melrose.
