Eleanor G. (Virgin) Abbott
Born on the 4th of July in 1923 in Lynn, Eleanor was one of five children of the late George H. Virgin and Carmen (Gardner) Virgin. Eleanor was raised in Revere before moving to Melrose with her family. In 1943, she married the late John F. Abbott, who was also a resident of Melrose, and together they started a family of four in Melrose.
Eleanor stayed at home to raise the family until her husband, recognizing a need for more ice rinks, opened Hockeytown USA on Franklin Street in Melrose. Working alongside John, Eleanor kept the books, acted as office manager, and did her best to keep their customers happy. They grew the business together and in 1972, opened a second hockey rink on Route One in Saugus MA.Hockeytown continues operating on Rt. 1 under Eleanor and John's son, Larry.
On summer weekends, Eleanor and John developed a love for sailing while at their summer house on Gerry Island in Marblehead Harbor. They spent summer days sailing around New England, and had many fond memories and extended trips together over the years.In her free time, Eleanor was an avid reader, and enjoyed the winter months in Cape Coral, Florida.
Eleanor was known for her quiet chuckle, calm nature, and her steady hand which was always ready to support those she loved, no matter how wild the adventure. She will be missed, but always lovingly remembered as a woman whose presence made the world a better place.
Eleanor was the beloved wife of the late John F. Abbott with whom she shared 59 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Clifford F. Abbott and his wife Joyce of Green Bay, WI, Kenneth J. Abbott and his wife Laurie Egan of Juno, FL, Lawrence W. Abbott and his wife Marybeth of Saugus, and Kathy L. Abbott of Beverly. Dear sister of the late Charles Virgin, Jack Virgin, Howard Virgin, and Dorothy Millen. Cherished grandmother of Anna Johnson, Melissa Cucciniello, Kelly Abbott, Jason Egan and his wife Jessica, Ben Abbott, Jacob Abbott, Lilly Rivera and her husband Harry, and Tim Abbott and his wife Rae. Loving great-grandmother of Joey and Sienna Cucciniello, Matty Papagikos, Kyliegh Egan, and Mirren Abbott. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
