Mrs. Elinor M. (Shute) "Elly" Ward, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, December 6, 2013, at age 89.
Elinor was born on November 17, 1924 in Malden, one of five children of the late Jordan Shute and Sophie (Harding) Shute.
Raised in Malden, she graduated from Malden High School. During WWII, she proudly supported veterans while working as a timekeeper and joined the United Service Organization (USO).A fun loving person, she loved the swing dancing and entertaining of the troops.
In 1943, she married Fred C. Ward, and they settled on Lebanon Street in Melrose where they lived for over 50 years.Elly stayed home to raise her beloved 6 children and Fred worked for the Melrose Fire Department as a Lieutenant.During the summer months, she enjoyed the camp they had built on Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham, NH.
Elly was forever proud of her family, especially her 6 children.She cherished the fact that they all graduated from college and she was so proud of each of them.
Aside from raising her family, Elly was always up for a good time.The life of the party, she enjoyed dancing, never missed a Congo line, and always, always looked good doing it.She was a friendly person who would do anything for her grandkids, never missed a birth, and kept a stash of Peeps, and gumdrops for whenever they arrived.She was generous, loved shopping and enjoyed knitting.
Elinor was a longtime member of the Green Street Baptist Church.She enjoyed travelling with Fred to his US Navy reunions, and will be lovingly remembered for her huge collection of Cardinal paraphernalia.Elly kept a neat and clean house, and was proud to show it off during holidays.
Above all, she was deeply devoted to her family, and so proud of all of them.
She will be loving remembered as the beloved wife of the late Fred C. Ward (Ret. Lieutenant, Melrose Fire Department) and the late Donald Armstrong.Devoted mother of Fred C. Ward and his wife Kym of Milford, CT.Former mother-in-law of Barbara Firestone of MD, and John Mainini of Wilmington.Caring step-mother of Russell Armstrong and his wife Margaret of Hampstead, NH, Susan Buckley and her husband Christopher of Revere, Donna Giglello of Revere, and Donald Armstrong, Jr. of Southington, CT.Dear sister of the late Walter Shute, Jane Powers, Edward Shute, and Muriel White. Cherished grandmother of Fred, Jeffrey, Jason, Robin, Michael, Chelsea, Samantha, Amanda, Alexandria, Daniel, Elizabeth, Sasha, Cassandra, Ethan, Aimee, Jacob, and Covell.Loving great-grandmother of Masahiro, Takahiro, Lily, Dylan, Austin, Angelese, and Xavier.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Elly's life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, December 11 from 4-8 PM, and for her Funeral Service at the Green Street Baptist Church, 179 Green St., Melrose celebrated on Thursday at 10 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
