On a beautiful New England day, with the sun shining in her room, classical music playing, and family with her, Mrs. Elizabeth L. "Betsy" Barton, passed away while resting peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2014.She was 77.
Elizabeth, known lovingly as "Betsy" was born on May 13, 1937 in Boston, one of two children of the late Francis L. Barton and Elizabeth (Harris) Barton.
As a young woman, Betsy taught first grade in Stoneham, Massachusetts.After a time raising her two surviving children, Melanie Gillespie of Seattle, Washington and Garrett Gillespie of Melrose, and working in other professions for several years (including as a Editorial Assistant for MIT's Lincoln Laboratory), she returned to teaching and until three months ago was tutoring English at two community colleges in Seattle at age 77 before a fall and recurrence of cancer required her to stop and tend to her health.
In addition to her two children, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Leigh Gillespie of Melrose; her brother, James and his wife Vaughan of Cambridge; two nephews, Matthew Barton and his wife Karen of Fairfax, VA and Patrick Barton of Cambridge; and three grandchildren, Emily, Jackson and Charlotte.A life long lover of music, art, and horticulture, she passed the joy of learning on to her children.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Betsy's life for her Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose celebrated on Saturday, August 30 at 1:30PM.
