Mrs. Elizabeth (Carr) "Bette" Guarente, a lifelong resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Massachusetts General Hospital, at the age of 91.

Elizabeth was born on December 6, 1921 in Boston, the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mary L. (Rendall) Carr.

Elizabeth or "Bette" as she was lovingly known, was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1939.From 1943 through 1945 she served her country in the US Navy as a secretary in Boston.She was proud to call herself a veteran and was a longtime member of the WAVES.On September 2, 1944, she married Albert V. Guarente at St. Mary's Church and they stayed in Melrose to raise their family.

Bette was an 11th generation Melrosian and had a deep love for and strong connection with the City of Melrose.She was proud to call Melrose home and through her charitable efforts helped make Melrose a better place. A descendent of the Upham family, Bette was a devoted member of the Upham Family Society, which is responsible for maintaining the Phineas Upham House on Upham St. in Melrose.She was also a member of the Melrose Historical Society, chairwoman of the Kappa Swap Shop, and was a longtime active member and past president of the Kappa Delta Psi Sorority.The organization and its members held a special place in her heart and just recently, she was elated to attend the monthly Kappa meeting.

Bette was a person who loved helping others.Throughout her life, she devoted her time to helping others.Whether it was being home when her children arrived from school, or assisting a friend with home finances, being a caretaker for her parents, or organizing donations at the Kappa Swap Shop, Bette was always there to lend a helping hand.

From her high school years at MHS, and her many endeavors supporting the community, Bette had made many close friends.She remained very close to her dearest friends from high school and spoke regularly with them.With a strong sense of her own faith, Bette was a daily communicant at St. Mary's Church, until more recently when she began watching on Catholic TV.In her spare time, Bette enjoyed being outside and gardening.

Bette enjoyed personal time by caring for her children, and later, her 6 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.She was a loving and devoted wife to Albert and they enjoyed many car trips around the country together.She also loved visiting Kennebunkport, and seeing family members.

Elizabeth was the beloved wife of the late Albert V. Guarente with whom she shared 58 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Bill Guarente of Acton, and Susan E. Regan and her husband Robert of Melrose.Cherished grandmother of James Regan and his wife Leea of Melrose, Thomas Regan and his wife Valerie of Melrose, Daniel Guarente and his wife Julie of NH, Michael Guarente of NC, Timothy Guarente of VT, and Thomas Guarente of NH.Loving great-grandmother of Nicholas, Katie, Denis, Caroline, Susan, Samantha, Erin, Brigid, Odin, and Johanna.Caring sister-in-law of the late Ralph Guarente and his wife Ruth of FL.Also survived by her loving niece and nephew.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember Elizabeth's life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, December 1 from 2-6 PM, and again on Monday morning at 9 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Interment with US Navy military honors at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
