Mrs. Elizabeth (Pike) "Betty" Whittier, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at age 91.
Elizabeth was born on July 6, 1922 in Tenants Harbor, Maine, one of seven daughters of the late Robert H. W. Pike and Elizabeth (MacKay) Pike.She was raised in Weymouth, graduated from Weymouth High School, and from the Melrose Hospital School of Nursing.For many years, she worked as a Registered Nurse for Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, and served as a City of Melrose School Department Nurse, as well as a Melrose Board of Health Nurse.While on duty at Melrose-Wakefield, she met Elmer, her future husband, who was a patient in the hospital.They married on January 21, 1944, and settled in Melrose to raise four children
Family was of utmost importance to Betty as she was a caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.She loved visiting Maine, and enjoyed many trips over the years to such places as Hawaii, Canada, England, and California.In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and crafts, but perhaps her favorite pastime was watching the Red Sox.
Betty was a member of the Melrose Arts and Crafts Society, and was a longtime and active member of the First United Methodist Church.
She will be lovingly remembered as the beloved wife of the late Elmer S. Whittier with whom she shared 54 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Sandy Whittier and his wife Jeanette of Belchertown, Bert Whittier of Melrose, Donna Smith and her husband Philip of Harwich Port, and Wendy Warren and her husband John of Stoneham.Dear sister of Eula Tower of Bow, NH, Florence E. Pike of Lynnfield, Audrey Sulis of Falmouth, Heloise Mailloux of NJ, and the late Eleanor Arnoldi and Ivy M. Pike. Cherished grandmother of Geoff Whittier, Greg Whittier, Gary Whittier, Elizabeth Doucette, Sarah McGuire, Leigh Warren, and Matt Warren.Loving great-grandmother of Allie, Ella Marie, Claudia, Brady, and Aidan.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Betty's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, August 29 from 4-8 PM, and for her Funeral Service at the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose celebrated on Saturday, September 14 at 10 AM.In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176, or to the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund, PO Box 760695, Melrose, MA 02176.
