Mr. Ernest L. Benard, of Lakeville, a former longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Island Terrace in Lakeville, Massachusetts.He was 85 years old.He was born in Malden on January 30, 1924, a son of the late Frank F. and Rose E. (White) Benard. He was a graduate of Melrose High School where he lettered in football and received numerous awards. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. A devoted husband and father, he was very involved in the Melrose community, as a member of Trinity Church and a member of the Fidelity Masonic Lodge AF&AM. He raised his family in Melrose before moving to Falmouth, MA in 1981, where he and his late wife, Shirley, operated The Moorings Lodge, a bed and breakfast, for 25 years. He was a member of the bricklayers union for over 50 years. Previously, Mr. Benard was an operating officer of A. Belanger & Sons Construction Co.Ernie was the beloved husband of the late Shirley L. (McRae) Benard with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Shirley died May 9, 2008. He was the loving father of Richard and his wife Cynthia of Lakeville, Gary and his wife Susan of Melrose, Michael and his wife Donna of East Hampton, CT, Gerry Carney and his wife Kathy of Pocasset and the late Jeffrey Benard.He was the dear brother of June (Benard) Maserian of Alton, NH, Robert Benard of Burlington, and the late Edward Benard.He was the cherished grandfather of Matthew, Kate, Elspeth, Daniel, Ernie, Andrew, Chelsea, Gerry, Kerri and Shannon.
