Mr. Ernest Raymond "Bud" Pendleton, Jr. a Melrose resident since 1956, passed away peacefully while at home on Tuesday afternoon, July 17, 2012, at the age of 83.

He was born on December 27, 1928 in Granby, CT, one of two children of the late Dr. Ernest Raymond Pendleton, Sr. and Hazel (Nelson) Pendleton.

He was the beloved husband of the late Martha Peabody (Parke) Pendleton with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Devoted father of Parke Brookman Pendleton of Melrose and Andrew Endicott Pendleton and his wife Gretchen Elizabeth (Ekeland) Pendleton of Royersford, PA. Cherished grandfather of Elizabeth Beatrice Pendleton and Gabriel Nelson Pendleton, both of Royersford, PA.

He attended a two-room grammar school in Granby, Connecticut where he received a great education, learning how to read music at a young age.

He was sickly as a child but persevered with the help of his parents.His mother, who was a teacher, home-schooled him when he missed class.His father, who was a physician, took care of him and arranged cutting-edge experimental medical treatments for him.

For years as a child in Granby he published a weekly one-page newspaper, the "Neighborhood News."He and his playmates wrote the paper and it was produced by his father's doctor office personnel.In recognition of this achievement he met the publisher of Time-Life, Henry Luce in Boston in 1941.

He was an active Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Life Scout.

He graduated from Simsbury High School in Connecticut in 1946 where he had been co-editor of his yearbook, as well as very active in student government, including participation in 1944 in a statewide student House of Representatives session held in the Connecticut State House.

After high school, he attended Suffield Academy for one year in 1947 where he played soccer and lettered in golf.

He graduated from Boston University College of Business Administration in 1951.During his time at BU, he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity, participated for three years in Glee Club, touring all over the eastern United States, was Editor-in-Chief of the 1951 Hub, the yearbook for Boston University, and was named to the Scarlet Key, an honor society.It was during his experience at the Hub that he met his future wife, Martha.

He served in the Air National Guard for seven years.

He worked for Bank of Boston for 38 years and retired as a Vice President.

Both Bud and Martha were extraordinarily active in voluntary organizations over the years.

They were active in Spotlighters during the 1960's, an amateur theatrical group in Lynnfield that performed plays and musical productions.

He was president of the Boston Chapter of the American Institute of Banking in 1968-69.

He served on the Melrose School Committee for ten years from 1971 to 1981.He served as chairman in 1978-79.As a consequence of this service, his name appears on the plaque in the lobby of MHS twice.

Both Bud and Martha were active supporters of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.Martha served on the Board of Trustees for twenty-two years, while Bud served on the Finance Board of for ten years.

He was president of the Greater Boston Bankers Association in 1988.He threw out the first ball at a Red Sox game as president of this organization in 1988.

He gave Martha attentive and loving care while she was sick seventeen years ago.

He was widowed for seventeen years but remained active until late in life.After Martha's passing he joined Rotary in Melrose and the church choir, both of which kept him active and busy.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember Bud's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, July 27 from 4-8 PM and for his Funeral Service celebrated at the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
