Mr. Eugene J. Hummer, Jr. of Lincoln, NH, formerly of Woburn and Lynnfield, MA died April 1, 2004 at the Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, NH.
Mr. Hummer was born March 16, 1927 in Albany, NY, son of the late Eugene J. and Mildred (Garrett) Hummer.
Mr. Hummer grew up in the Village of Ravena, NY, a few miles south of Albany where, as a young boy,he would scoot around in his little red radio flyer wagon, kneeling on one knee, pushing with the other leg.One day, scooting across the street, he was hit by a car suffering a broken leg.Lucky for many of us, he would survive. But years later he would realize this caused one leg to be shorter than the other.
In spite of this he went on to be a good athlete. At Manlius Military Academy he was captain of the basketball team, Most valuable player of the Baseball team, high scorer of the Football team and sprinter on the track team, coming in third in the New York State Meet.He joined the Marines but the war ended just before his deployment. He went home and on to Cornell University where he played football and baseball where he broke his other leg sliding into 3rd base. After graduation he pitched professionally for the New York Giants farm system but he had 2 small children at home and in those days, professional baseball didn't pay as well as today so he needed to get a real job.He went to work for General Electric where he worked for 36 years travelling the world selling jet engines and replacement parts.During his years at GE, he first lived in Schenectady, NY transferring to Lynn where he lived for about six years and then moving to Lynnfield. He was a referee for high school basketball, coached little league baseball, played baseball for the Lynnfield Colonials and served as President of Sports Booster's Club.
Mr. Hummer was the former husband of Gloria B. (Slingerland) Hummer andFather of Gregory C. Hummer and his wife, Keren of Lynnfield, Gary R. Hummer and his wife Jean of Haverhill, Eugene J.
