Faith L. (Ballantyne) Whittier, longtime resident of Melrose, died on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.She was 88.

Faith was born on September 30, 1929 in Ware, MA, one of two children of the late Gordon R. and Doris E. (Greenway) Ballantyne.She grew up in West Warwick, RI, and loved spending her summers in Ellsworth, Maine.She graduated from West Warwick High School, and attended and graduated from the Franklin County School of Nursing.

Faith met Ernest W. Whittier through her cousin, and they went on to get married on January 26, 1951.They lived and raised their family in Melrose.She worked hard as a Registered Nurse, and worked her way to becoming a Nursing Supervisor at Malden Hospital.She retired from nursing on her 70th birthday.

A lover of nature, Faith and her family went on numerous camping trips, camping anywhere from Cape Breton Island, all the way to Georgia, and everywhere in between. Besides camping, Faith loved to travel, with her favorite destination being Hawaii, and she always looked forward to her Marine Reunion trips with Ernest, which took them all across the country.

Faith was very active in her family's life, as well as the community.She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Brownie Troop Leader, and later in life, volunteered at the Fernald School, and the Melrose Senior Center.She was also known as the neighborhood nurse on her street.She loved her house filled with family and friends on holidays, and loved to cook and bake.She was known as an inventive cook, and really excelled at baking desserts.

Faith also had a creative side.She was an expert knitter and seamstress, making afghans and hats for cancer patients and soldiers.With an eye for photography, Faith had a passion for the craft, and became an award winning photographer.

Faith's loving heart and soul, generosity, and strength, which came from her Scot's heritage, will be deeply missed by her family and friends.She was able to touch many lives through the years, and all are better for it.

Faith is the beloved wife of the late Ernest W. Whittier with whom she shared 56 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Stephen D. Whittier and his wife Ann of Salem, Allyson L. Whittier of Melrose, Kenneth E. Whittier and his wife Jane of Waltham, and Heather F. Romano and her husband James of Westford. Dear sister of the late Gordon R. Ballantyne Jr. and his wife Carolyn. Cherished grandmother of Erika Siegfried and her husband John, Justin Whittier, Christopher Whittier, Jason Whittier, Kenneth Whittier, Collin Whittier, Manuela Romano, and Manuel Romano.Adored great grandmother of Ursula, Georgia, and John-Iver.She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives & friends will gather in honor & remembrance of Faith's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, April 3 from 4-8pm, and again for her Funeral Service celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00am.
