Mrs. Fern A. (Estey) Curran, a Melrose resident, passed away on Wednesday morning, June 29, 2011 at Radius HealthCare Center in Danvers.She was in her 100th year.
Born on February 5, 1912 in Woodland, Maine, she was one of six children the late Herbert Estey and Blanche (Haney) Estey.
Mrs. Curran was raised and educated in Woodland, Maine.She became a hairdresser after attending the White Swan Beauty Academy in Lowell.She was one of the first women in Massachusetts to receive her hairdresser's license and worked in Everett at Betty's Beauty Shop on Broadway.
Fern was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Wyoming Group.During her free time, she loved baking, sewing, reading, knitting, and watching the Red Sox and Bruins.She also travelled extensively, visiting Israel, Africa, Egypt and much of the U.S.Later in life, she was known for her love of singing and dancing.
Fern was a devoted mother for many years to her 3 sons and 3 daughters and a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
She was the beloved wife of the late James E. Curran with whom she shared 54 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Richard J. Curran and his wife Sharon of NC and South Africa, Roger E. Curran and his wife Pamela of OK, Jayne L. Labovitz of Marblehead, Joanne "Linda" Curran of Melrose, Ronald N. Curran and his wife Lee of The Colony, TX, and the late Jacqueline L. Lawson.Dear sister of the late Derwood, Gerald, Wilmot, and Reginald Estey and Edith DeBow.Cherished grandmother of Spring, John, Cindy, Caren, Tim, Rich, Stephen, Ben, Erica, and Shawn.Also lovingly survived by son-in-law, David Labovitz of Marblehead and 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service at the First Baptist Church, 561 Main St., Melrose, Saturday, July 2 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday from 4-8 PM.Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
