Mrs. Florence A. (Paino) Melchionna, a resident of Melrose since 1968, passed away on Thursday evening, September 10, 2009 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.She was 85 years old. Mrs. Melchionna was born in Malden on July 28, 1924, to the late Felix Paino and Mary (DeBeasie) Paino. Florence was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School.A member of the Woman's Ordinance during World War II, she worked at the Watertown Arsenal.Following the war, she married her late husband, Nicholas Melchionna, and together they opened their own bowling alley, Waltham City Bowling Alleys.In 1958, Florence and Nicholas opened and developed the famous, "Route 1 Miniature Golf" depicted by the orange dinosaur along Rt. 1.Florence was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas Melchionna.Dear sister of Robert Paino and his wife Nancy of Carver and the late Alfred Paino.Cherished aunt of Mary Paino, Susan Paino, Karen Rix, Patricia Johnston, Paula Rodig, Christine Jones, Andrea Pace, Diana Fay, Phyllis Ann LaCava, Anthony Melchionna, Nicholas Melchionnaand the late Alfred Paino and James Melchionna. Also survived by many loving grand nieces and grand nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Mass in honor and remembrance of Florence's life in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose, Tuesday, September 15 at 10 AM.Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
