Francis Parsons Homer, 96, of Everett died Tuesday afternoon, April 4, 2006 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba in Littleton, MA. Frank, who loved the Lord, his wife, his country, and his family, was born in Freshwater Newfoundland to Wilson and Elizabeth (Parsons) Homer. After the First World War and the collapse of his father's fish business, Frank, as the eldest son, spent his teen years helping his mother with the family farm while his father worked for three years in the United States to bring his family to America in the wave of Newfoundland emigration.Upon his arrival in the United States at age 14 and with an eighth grade education, Frank worked to help his family. In 1930 he met his future wife, Florence (Winsor), the daughter of Carbonear NFLD emigrants. At a time when a non relative had to vouch for character, his future mother-in-law signed his petition papers for citizenship. Frank, worked at GE, as a foreman at Biltrite Rubber, and as a die maker at CCA. He learned to drive at age 45 when he paid cash for his first automobile and was proud he never received a citation in 48 years of driving and was able to renew his license at age 90. Together, he and his wife saw all their children and grandchildren graduate college with many earning advanced degrees and several attaining entrance into the professions. A practical man who maintained his house well into his nineties, Frank while raising his family in the fifties had kept a rope (as had his father before him) in his third-floor bedroom in case of fire, to save "at least one of the children". Later living alone, Frank kept his uncle's sealer's club close at hand. He enjoyed listening to the "Irish Hour" music which reminded him of his boyhood. Frank lived to "hold fast to all that which is good".
