October 19, 1938 — December 11, 2021

Frank H. Mcnary

Frank H. McNary, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at age 83.

Frank was born in Somerville on October 19, 1938, one of four children of the late Henry T. McNary and Margaret (Frizzell) McNary. A graduate of Somerville High School, Frank received an Accounting Degree from Bentley College, and worked in accounting for over 30 years. For much of his career, Frank was an accountant with WR Grace Co. until taking early retirement at age 57.

Frank married the love of his life and best friend, Janet E. MacKay, on January 31, 1958. They settled in Melrose to raise a family of four children and shared a lifetime of wonderful memories and enduring love. As a young father to four, Frank took joy in participating in his children's activities as a Melrose Youth sports coach for many years.

Frank shared a love of the outdoors with his family through annual camping trips in the VW Bus, not without an inevitable mishap or two. Spearheaded by Frank, the camping trips were memorable for both laughter and tears, but always served to strengthen the familial bonds.

A humble, well-respected man, Frank was relied upon by all. A longtime and active member of the First United Methodist Church, Frank served as a member of the Trustees and Church Treasurer. Known as "Doc" to many of the Church youth, he was actively involved in many youth programs while offering his steady, unassuming, and supportive presence when needed.

In retirement, Frank enjoyed traveling throughout the world, including many cruises, seeing the National Parks, and always returned to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. For several weeks in the winter, he and Janet spent time in Florida where he enjoyed golfing.

Frank quietly endured many health challenges, all while continuing to serve as a source of strength for his family. He took pride in being self-sufficient, maintaining his home, and offering help to others whenever needed. Above all, Frank's proudest accomplishment was his family. He will be deeply missed, but the example he set of quiet strength, kindness through adversity, and selfless acts will continue to inspire and strengthen his family.

Frank was the beloved husband of 63 years to Janet E. (MacKay) McNary. Devoted father of Kathy Ciampa and her husband Michael of Middleton, Steven McNary and his wife Pamela of Easton, NH, David McNary and his wife Wanda of Florida, MA, and Keith McNary and his wife Catherine of St. Charles, MO. Dear brother of Henrietta Goodwin and her husband Robert of Melrose, the late Robert McNary and his surviving wife Sheila of Somerville, and the late John McNary and his surviving wife Barbara of Decatur, IN. Proud grandfather of Mac, Zachary, Cassandra, Jamie Lee, Andrew, Paige, and Steven. Also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and one nephew.
