Frederick H. Humphreys, a beloved member of the Melrose community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading, at the age of 89.
Born on April 15, 1934, in Malden, one of three children of the late Ormand H. and Mildred Esthelle (Olsen) Humphreys, Fred leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a deep love for his family.
Growing up in Malden, Fred attended Malden High School, where he forged lifelong friendships and discovered his passion for boating. From an early age, he would spend his summers at the family camp in Pembroke, creating treasured memories with his loved ones.
After graduating, Fred proudly served his country as part of the Coast Guard Reserves, dedicating his time to safeguarding the nation's shores. Following his service, he started his career at Andrew Dutton Company in Boston and later found his calling at the family business, Briggs and Briggs Music Store in Cambridge. With his unwavering dedication, Fred became a respected figure in the industry, offering a haven for musicians and music enthusiasts alike. Fred also worked as the sextant at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Medford.
Fred's commitment extended far beyond his business. He found solace and community at the First Baptist Church of Melrose. Fred devoted his time to teaching Sunday school, taking up collections, and fulfilling the role of a deacon, embodying compassion and faith in his everyday life.
Outside of work and church, Fred and his beloved wife, Diana, shared a passion for travel. From cruises to Nassau, Bermuda, to unforgettable trips to Nashville, they embraced the joy of exploring new places and creating lasting memories. Their adventures were not limited to travel, as they were actively involved in the Newport Mansions Preservation Society, contributing to the annual flower show.
Rest well, dear Fred. You will forever be missed and fondly remembered.
Fred was the beloved husband of the late Diana C. (Murray) Humphreys with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Devoted father of Susan E. Surovy and her husband John of Methuen, Paul O. Humphreys and his companion Jane Flaherty of Wakefield, and Allen F. Humphreys of Melrose. Dear brother of Paul Humphreys and his late wife Judy of Tewksbury, and Judith Grant and her late husband Andrew of Malden. Cherished grandfather of 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
