George A. Brambilla

Mr. George A. Brambilla, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody.He was 82 years old.

George was born in Rome, Italy on December 20, 1927, one of two sons of the late Arthur and Fernanda (D'Attavi) Brambilla.Soon thereafter his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Connecticut.He served in the US Army Air Corps in Guam during World War II.After returning home, he married his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Kelly, on June 30, 1951.He and Dorothy moved to Boston where they lived in the Bay Village section of Boston until moving to Melrose in 1960.

He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University as well as a Master's degree in Music Composition from B.U.He was a pianist and an arranger/ composer of music with a wide background that included radio, television and recording.He worked as a staff pianist for the Shubert Theater and the South Shore Music Circus.

Mr. Brambilla served as Dean of the Berklee College of Music from 1960 - 1963 and then as Dean of the Boston Conservatory of Music until he was elected President in 1967.He served as the President of the Boston Conservatory of Music from 1967 until his retirement in 1979.Following his career as an administrator, George became a partner in the Falcone Piano Manufacturing Company in Haverhill.

Mr. Brambilla was a member of the Rotary Club of Boston, the Boston Musicians Association, the National Honorary Music Society, and was a 50-year member of the Local #9 Boston Musician's Union.

An avid tennis player, he and his wife Dorothy, were active members of the Melrose Tennis Association.George also enjoyed reading.

George was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Kelly) Brambilla with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.Loving brother of William Brambilla and his wife Joen of MI.Dear uncle of Elizabeth "Lisa" Doble and her husband Christopher of CA, Paul Brambilla of FL, and great uncle of William Doble.Cousin of Pauline Zimmer Tremblay and her husband Roger of CT.

Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, August 9 at 10 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours prior to the Mass on Monday from 9:00 - 10:00 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
