Mr. George A. M. Burrell, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening November 24, 2013, at Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center in Medford, at age 85.
George was born on June 4, 1928 in Everett, one of three children of the late Alexander and Margaret (Thompson) Burrell.He was raised in Everett where he graduated from Everett High School and attended Boston University School of Business.An Army veteran, George served his country honorably during the Korean War.
Following his discharge, George began his career working in data processing for H.A. Johnson.After 20 years, he transferred his acquired skills to the accounting department at Stone & Webster Engineering Co. where he worked from 1973 until his retirement in 1993.
Throughout his life, George stayed connected and faithful to his local Church.While growing up in Everett, he attended the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, and participated in the youth fellowship.After settling in Melrose and finding a home at the First Congregational Church, George actively contributed to many Church groups including singing in the Choir for over 30 years, and joining the Men's Group.He also volunteered his time by assisting the Church sexton for several years.
In his personal time, George enjoyed gardening, and supporting the local Boston sports teams.He particularly enjoyed returning to Prince Edward Island every summer for a 2 week vacation with the family. Returning year after year, George cherished many memories from the family's rustic cliff cottages overlooking the sandy beach and warm ocean.
George was a devoted family man, who will be remembered for always being good to his children, and taking loving care of his grandchildren.
George was the beloved husband of the late Muriel K. (MacFayden) Burrell with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. Devoted father of Dede L. O'Leary and her husband Michael of Everett, Dean A. Burrell of Gainesville, VA, and Jeanine K. Mondi and her husband Mark of Henderson, NV.Dear brother of the late Margaret Fotos, and John "Jack" Burrell.Cherished grandfather of April, Michael, Heather, Kyle, John and Alex.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of George's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, December 3 from 4-8PM, and for his Funeral Service celebrated at the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday at 10:00 AM.Interment with US Army military honors at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
