George Albert "Al" Powell, a resident of Brewster, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Wingate at Melrose, at age 77.
Al was born in Boston on May 9, 1939, one of three children of the late George A. Powell and Serena (Watson) Powell. He was raised Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School before completing business classes at Boston University. Al enjoyed his service time in the Army National Guard as a Medic and remained proud of his service throughout his life. He married Pamela A. Woliston and settled on Cape Cod to raise a family of two children. Al's wife passed away at a young age in 1983, and he became a single, working father of two young children who dedicated himself to providing for his children.
Al was a small business owner with two retails stores located on Cape Cod, "The Bottom Line" and "Bargain Village." With a strong work ethic, Al was able to balance the demands of being a father and operating a successful small business. Working long hours, nearly every day and rarely taking a vacation, Al's free time was spent with his family or with a fly rod in hand. He was an avid fisherman with a love for fly fishing the Cape with his buddies. Outside of his love for family, and fishing, he also had an interest in politics.
Al was the beloved husband of the late Pamela A. (Woliston) Powell. Devoted father of Timothy G. Powell and his wife Anne of Melrose, and Kathryn Mateos-Powell and her wife Linda of Medford. Dear brother of William G. Powell of Cambridge, and Maryanne Pais of WA. Cherished grandfather of Reilly, Tyler, and Henry Powell, all of Melrose. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor and remembrance of Al's life at First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist Church, 1969 Main St., Brewster, for his Memorial Service on Saturday, September 24 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Brewster Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Al's name may be made to the Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
