George F. Roberts, longtime Melrose resident, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 with his family by his side at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 68.
George was born on December 21, 1949 in Cambridge, one of six children of the late John Roberts and surviving mother Alice (Goffredo) Roberts. He grew up in a large Irish/Italian-American family in Cambridge and Somerville. As a child he enjoyed playing sports, and he developed a passion for music, a passion he would cultivate his entire life.He took up the guitar, and the rest, as they say, is history.
At a very young age George met and fell in love with Carol A. Johnston, and they went on to get married as teenagers on May 21, 1967 at St. Joseph's Parish in Somerville. The new couple started their family and eventually settled in Melrose in 1979.
George would become a professional musician and every time a new child of his and Carol's was to be born, he would write a song for the baby to play for them after their birth.
When the young family moved to Melrose, George set out to restore their beautiful Victorian home.In the process, he taught his children how to do construction work, plumbing, and electrical work.He was an outstanding carpenter and a lot of his work can be found throughout the Boston area.
George was talented at many things, but he was first and foremost, an exceptional husband, father and life coach. He instilled in his children a good work ethic, a love of music, the ability to repair anything that needed to be worked on, and most importantly, love of family and deep morals. He was a talented problem solver, a skill he passed on to "The Boys".
Family was everything to George. His happiest moments were being with family. He was very active in his children's lives, and that carried on into their adulthood. As a young family, they enjoyed camping in the mountains, gathering around the campfire, playing the guitar and singing.A couple of George's favorite places to go were the White Mountains, North Conway and Lake Ossipee.
A couple of George's other interests were reading, films, particularly StarWars, cooking for his friends and family, and he dearly loved his dog Aja.Playing cards on vacation or gathering with his closest friends was a favorite pastime.
George lived his life in a way that others could look up to.He was strong, passionate, had great family values, and an amazing sense of humor, which was contagious. He loved a good joke even if it was on him.His high pitched laugh was infectious and would brighten up the room. The skills, morals, and love of music will live on through Carol, and their boys.He will be missed terribly.
