George Nelson Torrey

George Nelson Torrey, PhD, a resident of Ocala, Florida and formerly longtime of Melrose, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2014, at age 85.

George was born on October 4, 1929 in Rockland, Maine, son of the late George N. and Eva (Snow) Torrey.Raised and educated in Maine, he served his country proudly during the Korean War in the US Army.A career Professor, George received his BA and MA degrees from Suffolk University, and his PhD in Education from Boston University.He later attended the Universidad de Valencia in Spain and the University of London where he also taught classes in media.

George dedicated his career to the educational field and the improvement of higher education. He was a recognized Professor of English at Salem State College for 38 years, retiring in 2000. As a pioneer in the use of instructional media as a tool in the classroom, he was well known throughout the educational world for utilizing technology and media for an improved learning experience. Through a variety of courses and over the course of nearly four decades, he had a lasting impact on many of his students at Salem State.

In addition to the positive changes he made in education, George was active in the Melrose community through the Beethoven Society, the Melrose Senior Chorus, and as a writer for the Melrose Mirror. He was also an active member and volunteer of the Council on Aging, and the president of the AARP #1124 in Melrose.

George was the longtime friend of the late Richard P. Finn, PhD.Dear brother of Shirley Lindig of Ocala, FL, and the late Phyllis Noonan, Audrey Helems, and Barbara Cossa.Also survived by his extended family and many friends.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor of George's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, October 29 from 4-6 PM, and again for his Funeral Service celebrated on Thursday at 10 AM. Interment with US Army honors in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
