Dr. Geraldine Wheelock (Sawyer) Shirley of the Berkeley Residence in Halifax, Nova Scotia, formerly of Melrose, died July 16, 2003.
Dr. Shirley was born November 2, 1905 in Melrose, MA, daughter of the late Charles E. and Grace (Dunklee) Sawyer.
Dr. Shirley received her A.B. from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA in 1927 and her M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1931.She did residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and others, and was later associated with the Boston Dispensary Well Baby Clinic, the Church Home Children's Aid and other clinics as well as practicing pediatrics in Melrose.Her Boston Dispensary baby clincis were her most gratifying.She moved to Denton, TX in 1949 where she worked as a college infirmary physician.While in Denton she became cofounder of Denton Preparatory School, later Selwyn School, promoted by her abiding interest in her daughters' education.Widowed in 1957, she subsequently supported them through a total of six post-secondary degrees.
She returned to Massachusetts in 1961, and worked first at Mount Holyoke College, then at the VA Hospital in Leeds and retired in December 1982.Dr. Shirley then lived a few years in the guesthouse of St. Anne's Convent in Cambridge, MA before moving to her daughter'shome in Nova Scotia.
Wife of the late Arthur Fosdick Shirley.Mother of Margaret Anne Morgunov and her husband Nikolas of Lunenburg, NS, Canada and Mary Elizabeth Economou and her husband Alex of London, England.Sister of the late Mildred S. Nutten.Aunt of the late Joan Sawyer Snyder. Graveside service at Wyoming Cemetery, Sylvan St., Melrose, Monday, August 4, at 11AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
