The Massachusetts State Lottery lost one of it's best customers on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021. Gerard Edgar "Jerry" Smith, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital at age 65.

Jerry was born in Salem on November 23, 1955, one of two children of the late Edgar Smith and Helen (Mackey) Smith. He was raised in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School in 1973. Jerry continued his education at Boston State College, graduating in 1977. Through high school and college, he excelled at playing lacrosse. Jerry was most passionate about his wife Jeannie, and also loved all the dogs that shared his life, all Boston sports, the 3 Stooges, Disney, camping, the Topsfield Fair, gardening, Halloween and any show that made him laugh. He worked for 46 years as a deli clerk at several local Shaw's and Star Markets.

Jerry was beloved husband of Jeanne M. (Kelly) Smith with whom he shared 34 years of marriage. Cherished brother of Julie Smith Fleming and her husband Charlie of Beverly. Loving son-in-law of Doris A. (Waddington) Kelly and the late John J. Kelly. Caring brother-in-law of Judith Kelly and her husband David Bowditch of Bedford, James Kelly and his wife Barbara of Griffin, GA, Joyce Costello and her partner John Feehly of Billerica, Jennifer Kelly of Gloucester, and the late John J. Kelly, Jr. and his wife Teresa. Dear uncle of Kerri Koncius and her husband Adam, Dan Fleming, Laura Kelly Bowditch and her husband Will Allured, Rebecca Kelly Bowditch, JJ Kelly, Jessica Kelly, Jenna Kelly, Stephanie Carty and her husband Dave, and Rachel Costello. Loving great-uncle of AJ, Aidan, Asher, Nolan and Conor.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tues. Nov. 2 from 4-8pm, and for his Funeral Service at St. John's Episcopal Church, 8 Prospect St., Saugus celebrated on Wed. Nov. 3 at 11am. All are kindly asked to wear face masks.
