H. Alan Whitney

Alan Whitney of Reading, in his 81st year died at his home, after a short illness on Sunday October 23, 2005, from pancreatic cancer with his loving family at his bedside. Alan was born December 1, 1924 in North Haledon, NJ, son of the late Henry A. Whitney and Esther (Meier) Whitney. Mr. Whitney was raised and educated in Reading, graduating from Reading High School in 1942. Alan, for many years was the former co-owner of Scott Builders Inc., a General Contracting Company that was located in Melrose. During his life, Alan was active, and a proud member of the Boy Scouts,Melrose Rotary Club and Old South United Methodist Church in Reading where he was a member of the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees.Alan was a charter member of the Reading Scholarship Foundation. Alan was the devotedhusband for 58 years to Ruth B. "Bunky" (Berg) Whitney. The loving father of Susan A. Whitney and her partner Pete Fleurant of Arlington, Jeanne B. Spignese and her late husband John of Reading,Alan "Toby" Whitney and his wife Karen and Jon C. Whitney and his wife, Darlene all of Reading and Cheryl A. Whitney of Melrose. Alan was the proud grandfather of Jodi Russell of West Springfield, Brian Spignese of South Lawrence, Michael Spignese, Matthew Spignese, Jenna Whitney, Jessica Whitney, Jonas Whitney, Jared Whitney and Hannah Whitney all of Reading. Funeral Service at Old South United Methodist Church, 6 Salem St., Reading Thursday October 27 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., MELROSE Wednesday 4-8 PM. Interment will be in Forest Glen Cemetery, Reading, MA. Gifts in his memory may be made tothe memorial fund at the church. Arrangements by Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St. Melrose, MA.
