S. Harrison "Harry" Carter, Jr., a Melrose resident, died after a brief illness, at home on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at age 56.
He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on November 21, 1956, and raised in Raleigh, NC, Fort Lee, VA, and Charles City, VA. Harrison, known as Harry, attended MIT in Cambridge for 4 years, where he was also known as HTF. He worked in the Network Security field as a computer programmer for many years including positions at Prime Computer, Veritas, Open Vision, IntoNetworks, and CA Technologies.
With varied and keen interests in many fields, including history, technology, cryptography, and science, he shared his enthusiasm with friends and family. An avid reader and collector, he enjoyed military history, science fiction, mysteries, and computer and board games. He was a member of the MIT Science Fiction Society, the MIT Strategic Gaming Society, and active with Battle Group Boston.
For many years Harrison and his wife Betsy were also members of The North American Guild of Change Ringers, participating in change ringing at many events and locations, including the Old North Church and the Church of the Advent in Boston.
Harrison was the beloved husband of Betsy Hosler with whom he shared 14 years of marriage. Cherished son of Shirley H. Carter (Captain, USAF, ret.) and the late Nancy Jane (Jones) Carter. Loving brother of Jane Luck, Jimmy Carter, Rachel Long, and Chip Carter. Dear uncle of Emily Long.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Harry's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, March 12 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
Visiting hours in Virginia will be at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, on Friday, March 15 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
Funeral Service at the Westover Episcopal Church, 6401 John Tyler Memorial Hwy, Charles City, VA, on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 AM.
