Mrs. Hazel (Walton) Bowen, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Monday afternoon, February 2, 2009 at the Cedar Glen Nursing Home in Danvers with her loving family at her bedside. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Bowen was born on March 19, 1915 in Needham, one of three daughters of the late William H. Walton and Grace M. (Allen) Walton.
Hazel was raised in Needham and Saugus, graduated from Saugus High School and from the Cambridge Conservatory of Music.Born into a musical family, Hazel began playing the violin at age ten and for the Melrose Symphony Orchestra in 1931 at the age of sixteen.She continued playing the violin with the M.S.O. for over 65 years and enjoyed her many years of playing music and many lasting friendships.Throughout her distinguished musical career, she performed numerous concerts in the Melrose area and composed a song to express her loving relationship with her husband, Archer, entitled, "Love Can Come in Any Season."For several years, she taught violin, piano and organ lessons and played trio music throughout the New England area.Mrs. Bowen worked at Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 20 years and was a longtime member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church.
Hazelwas the beloved wife of the late Archer C. "Doc" Bowen with whom she shared 32 years of marriage.Loving mother of Archer C. "Skip" Jr. and his wife Betty-Ann of Dracut, Robert C. and his wife Rita of Tyngsboro, Douglas C. of Reading, Beth Mandelbaum and her husband Neal of Danvers and the late Richard W. Bowen and his wife Alice Bowen of Amesbury.Dear sister of Phyllis A. Griner of Beverly and the late Dorothy W. Jernegan.Cherished grandmother of Bryan, Wendy, Dan, Keith, Scott, Deanna, Kristine, Mikael, Adam, Aaron, Richard and David. Loving great-grandmother of Brendan, Shelby, Zachary, Samantha, Kylie, Jenna, and Austin.
